What is Australian Rules Football?

Australian rules football or ‘Aussie rules’ is played between two teams of 18 players. Players score points by kicking an oval-shaped ball through a set of goalposts located at either end of a large oval shaped field. The game begins with a ball up in the center of the oval, much like basketball. Play in the game is free flowing and moves forward, backward, and around the field without offsides. Upon gaining possession of the ball, teammates can either run with or pass the ball. Running is limited to 15 meters to which the player in possession then needs to ‘dispose’ of the ball. Proper disposal can be done by either kicking the ball or hand-passing the ball via a one-handed punch, but not by throwing it. if A player catches a ball that is kicked by any other player, that player earns an unimpeded free kick called a mark. if a kick is dropped or hits the ground the play continues on. Players with the ball can be tackled by the opposition. IF a player with the ball is tackled it will result in a turnover or a ball up if the player being tackled did not have a chance to dispose of the ball. Kicking the ball through the middle goal posts earns 6 points, while kicking it through the side posts earns 1 point. At the end of the game, the team with the most points wins. Aussie Rules is played professionally in Australia where 18 teams compete in the AFL, the Australian Football League for the men, and the AFLW for the women.
